APRA-IN
Spring Conference
April 25, 2003
The 2003 Spring Conference was a
great success! Not only did we have good attendance, but the
panel members and afternoon speaker were excellent. Kudos to
everyone who made it happen. For those of you not in
attendance, the day was broken into two sessions:
The morning session consisted of a panel of speakers talking about
the unique characteristics of women, African-Americans, Asians and
Hispanics and their specific cultural attitudes and traditions of
giving. Our panelists were Cheryl Hall-Russell, a co-author of
"Rising to the Call: Evolving Philanthropic Trends in African
American Mega Churches;" Dr. Joyce Hertko, from the IU
Foundation's office for Women's Affairs; Carmen Hansen-Rivera,
president of Carmen, Inc.; and Dr. Philys Lan Lin, Professor of
Sociology and Director of Asian Programs at the University of
Indianapolis. Our panel moderator was Dr. Robert Kasberg,
Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at IUPUI.
For the afternoon session, Tim Seiler, director of Public Service
and The Fund Raising School and assistant professor of philanthropic
studies for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University,
discussed our changing demographics and current giving trends.
